Romance Novel Convention...Here We Come!!

Today is the big day! We fly out to Las Vegas this afternoon for a week of fun in the sun, hanging out with GREAT authors, and hopefully meeting some readers!

I've never been to Las Vegas before. My husband is there several times a year for work. This will also be my son's first time on an airplane. This is my first author convention too. The next week is going to be filled with firsts.

I will post pictures here and at Facebook as time allows. I'm looking forward to the costume party! This is a picture of my dress...but mine is red instead of green.

My husband will be wearing a kilt...a contemporary number as I couldn't talk him into yards and yards of plaid, going shirtless, and wearing lace up leather boots. At least, not in public! (Grin)

The month of July was a most amazing time! August looks to be just as promising, filled with new adventures. home construction, writing, my son taking driver's ed. My baby is going to be 16! Where has the time gone?

Thank you all so very much! I have the best readers. I really do!

Have a great week and I'll keep you posted!

Hugs,
Suzan

Newsletter Updates

Hello Everyone!

I'm so excited about the newsletter. Our target release date is May 1, 2013. My goal is to create something a little different.

I will have a few nifty features that I think you will enjoy.

Each month, I'm going to spotlight a new, never before published or very newly published author. It could be in any genre, not just historical fiction/historical romance. Everything from contemporary romance to science fiction. I really do believe in paying it forward and this, I believe, is the perfect opportunity to shine a little spotlight on those authors who have worked so very hard to write and publish that very first novel.

As I've been in those 'newbie' shoes before and didn't have a clue what I was doing, I hope to help these new authors along the road to success. Now, chances are I haven't read their novel, so this will be a journey we can all enjoy together.

There will also be section for short stories and poetry. This is open to all authors, published or not, professional or amateur.  Nothing is off limits (save for erotica). I love a short story every now and again and I think you will too. So if you have a short story or a poem that you'd like to submit for possible publication to my monthly newsletter, send me an email.

I would also love to have a recipe section, preferably something you have made yourself before. Submit your recipes to me via email. Pictures would be nice to accompany the recipe. ;o)

I'm also going to spotlight a Hunky Guy In a Kilt each month. So submit your pictures and a little bio on how you know your handsome hunk! Husbands, sons, nephews, grandsons, friends...as long as he isn't a celebrity or a cover model, we'd love to have you show him off. You can submit the photos and bio via email.

We hope to have fun contests each month too, so make sure you sign up for the newsletter. You can forward the link to your friends too.

Thank you all for your help, your support, and your kindness. Have a great week!

Hugs,
Suzan

My Interview With Author Melissa Foster

One of the great things about our technological world is that we are exposed to many authors that we wouldn't otherwise have been exposed to.

One of the nicest women that I have met via the twitterverse and Facebook is author Melissa Foster. She is always positive, sweet, kind and generous with her time, ideas, and really, really good books! ;o) Melissa agreed to a little interview with me and I'm sure you will find her as sweet as I do. She is a very fine author and I think you'll find her work as wonderful as I do!

1. Tell me about your most recent literary work.

This year I completed three novels. Below is a summary of TRACES OF KARA.

Kara Knight can't wait to leave her hometown for the promise of nursing school and a fresh start on her future--leaving behind an over protective mother, a broken heart and painful memories. However, twenty-five miles away, the brother she doesn't know is determined to be reunited with the sister he cannot forget.

Kara is abducted and thrown into her obsessive captor's delusional world. As the past she thought she knew unravels around her, Kara struggles to make sense of the memories that come creeping back, threatening her sanity and her safety. Meanwhile, Kara's mother races against time to save the daughter she fears she will lose when a long-held secret is revealed. The hours tick away as Roland plays out his plan--to take Kara with him into death at the exact moment of their birth, never to be separated again.

TRACES OF KARA is an action packed, pulse pounding psychological thriller/suspense novel that features a determined killer who slowly loses his grip on reality as his carefully detailed plan starts to fall apart and a heroine determined to move forward with her life who now must reconcile everything she believed to be true about her family with the reality of their tragic past.

2. What has been the most exciting thing that has happened as a result of your writing?

The most exciting? Getting a call from my literary agent telling me that an editor from a major publisher loved my manuscript!

3.  In all, how many books have you written?

To date, I’ve written six. I’m waiting on publication dates for three.
Megan’s Way, Come Back to Me, Chasing Amanda, (all published)
Traces of Kara, Where Petals Fall, and Have No Shame (to be published).

4. I read your book, Come Back To Me, and it did not have a typical happy ending, (yes, I've finally forgiven you for that!) What do you hope the reader takes with them after reading this story?

Well, I tend to disagree. It did not have the typical happily-ever-after ending, but if you think about it (no spoilers here), it did have a happy ending, just not for the person you were rooting for, right?

(Melissa is correct! She didn't end it the way I would have and THAT is what makes her a great author!)

Yes, I write controversial events in my books, and that is a prime example. My original ending was what you were hoping for, but while I was writing the story, that ending was not real. It would have felt to “fluffy” to me, so I wrote what I felt was true to the story.

I hope my readers will come away feeling introspective about their lives and what’s important in their lives. As you’ll recall – again, no spoilers – Beau has to rely on his faith in his marriage to carry on. That is an example of the type of thoughts I’d think my readers would be considering when they read the last words.

5. Who is your favorite author?

That is such a tough question, because I don’t always love every book by authors that I love, and that’s probably because I enjoy things to always be different, and many authors follow patterns in their writing. Here are a few authors I’ve enjoyed lately: Kathleen Grissom, Heather Gudenkauf, John Hart.

6. What or who inspires you to write?

Life is my biggest inspiration. A jog or walk outside will garner three or four ideas for books. I came home from the store this morning and told my son about a storyline I came up with about a woman in the store. It was suspenseful, and he turned to me and said, “Why would anyone’s mind work that way?” Meaning, “Why do you think about those things, Mom?!” My mind is always thinking in terms of stories.

7. I have heard that some writers use things called 'outlines' to write. Some even go so far as to give birthdays and extensive histories for each of their characters. Is this something you do as well?

I have heard of such a creature—the dreaded outline—but I am not someone who can create such a thing.  I’m a total pantzer, except that I do give my characters complete backgrounds—sometimes all the way back to games they played as children. Sometimes my characters appear as I’m writing (which I LOVE), and even then, they come complete with backgrounds, weaknesses, and often times, even quirky mannerisms.

(Interviewer's note: I was so relieved to find out Melissa is one of me!)

8. Is there a genre that you're just aching to try your hand at?

I never thought I’d write historical fiction and I did, and I loved it. My next undertaking is probably YA or New Adult. I just love to climb into the head of a rebellious younger person. It’s an easy regression for meJ

9. How many children do you have and what do they think of your writing?

My husband and I have six children, and what they think of it depends on the child. Our youngest two boys are my biggest cheerleaders, they love to hear about the stories and characters, and even the settings. Our older four kids are in college, grad school, or already graduated and working full-time. I think that since they’re so busy with lives of their own, my writing is just what I do.

10. You're stranded on a deserted island and it will be at least six months before you're rescued. Who is with you? What would you have to have in order to survive mentally, spiritually, and physically?

Oh so easy! My husband, my youngest kids (because my older ones would have no interest in being away from their lives for six months – otherwise I’d snag them, too), my laptop, internet (to connect with our older kids and my mother), my Winnie-The-Pooh bear (yes, seriously), a stack of notebooks and pens (not pencils), and a slab of memory foam with a comfy blanket and pillow. If allowed, an endless supply of paperbacks and chocolate.

11.  What is your favorite thing about writing?

Gosh, I think about this every single day. I think it’s the freedom of my creativity. I love everything about being a writer, but I probably do because there is no time to grow bored of my profession. Every day—every hour, is different. Every book offers new surprises and challenges.

12. Finally, is there a question you wished I had asked? If so, answer it here.

Hmm…nope! I take ‘em as they come and don’t think too hard about anything along the way. I had fun answering these! Thank you for sharing your virtual space with me today. xox

Thank you so much, Melissa, for sharing a bit of yourself with us today! ;o)

My Interview with author Emery Lee

I met author Emery Lane via her Romantic Historical Fiction Lovers page at Facebook. She is a very sweet lady and writes some very nice romance! I love her DeVere Series!
Tell me about your most recent literary work.
Thank you so much for asking, Suzan! This is the first time I have ever attempted to write more than one book at a time. I am currently working on three projects!
The first is entitled TREACHEROUS TEMPTATIONS and is a work of steamy historical romance set in my beloved Georgian era. It is also my first full-length novel writing as Victoria Vane. It is contracted with Entangled Publishing for the launch of their brand new Scandalous historical imprint. This book was very much inspired by the novels written in the 18th century in which virtue v. vice and evil v. innocence were the predominant themes. This novel is slated for release in early December!
Here is the "unofficial" blurb:
A reluctant heiress resigned to her fate … Mary Elizabeth Edwardes has one of the largest fortunes in England, but has no desire to leave her quiet country existence… and even less to acquire a husband she cannot choose for herself.
A dissolute nobleman bent on retribution … Trapped in a duplicitous existence since scandal destroyed his fortune and family name, Lord Hadley Blanchard has spent the better part of a decade posing as a disaffected exile while spying and seducing in the service of the English Crown.
A dangerous game of seduction, and intrigue …When summoned from abroad by a former lover, Lord Hadley perceives an opportunity for vengeance at last. By employing the full measure of his seductive charm, he woos the ward of the man who destroyed his life, little knowing that winning Mary's fortune will mean risking his own treacherous heart.
My second project is an unanticipated fifth addition to my Devil DeVere series!
I had thought the story complete with the fourth title, but have received so many requests for "more DeVere" that I have indeed come up with a tantalizing storyline in fitting with the series. The book is entitled, JEWEL OF THE EAST and is Salime's story (the Turkish courtesan from THE DEVIL'S MATCH). My major challenge was to find a hero worthy of Salime. He materialized in the form of, Simon Singleton, nicknamed "Sin," a former carousing buddy form DeVere's youth. This is a fabulous story that I think fans of the series will eagerly devour. It is scheduled for a February release from Breathless Press.
A brief teaser:
"Oh, woman! All care-relieving woman. Thou art the true physician to the sickly mind."
My third project is yet untitled, but is closely connected to JOTE, as it is a spin-off vignette featuring Diana and DeVere. This is a much shorter, steamy read but saying anything more would be a spoiler!
What has been the most exciting thing that has happened as a result of your writing?
Being discovered by people who want to read what I write! LOL!
Seriously, it is so very difficult to be noticed in the current tsunami of digital releases, many by some truly great authors. The last two months, however, have been a blessing for me. AWILD NIGHT'S BRIDE (book #1 in my DeVere series) has hit Amazon's Regency Romance Bestseller list and continues to climb. The rest of the series is also selling strong, and I am hearing from readers almost daily. I am beside myself with happiness!
In all, how many books have you written?
Seven. Nine if you also count my trade paperback in the DeVere series. My work to date includes:
THE HIGHEST STAKES and FORTUNE'S SON from Sourcebooks, both of which are romantic historical fiction novels writing as Emery Lee
A BREACH OF PROMISE from Ellora's Cave, my debut erotic historical romance writing as Victoria Vane
My Devil DeVere erotic historical romance series from Breathless Press which is comprised of four (soon to be five) serialized novellas: A WILD NIGHT'S BRIDE, THE VIRGIN HUNTRESS, THE DEVIL YOU KNOW and THE DEVIL'S MATCH. I will also have at least 3-4 more releases in the next six months as discussed above.
I've read your series, the Devil DeVere Series, and LOVE IT! What do you hope your readers come away thinking or feeling after reading these books, or any other book you've written?
My goal in writing this series was to be fresh and original, which is not an easy feat these days! The first two books were meant to be pure entertainment - light, hilarious, and super sexy. The third and fourth books were intended to deliver so much more in regard to depth and emotion.
I also hope to surprise readers with the way that I incorporate real history into even my erotic stories. Based on reader response, I feel that have accomplished these goals. ;P
Who is your favorite author?
I don't really have a single favorite author. I have, however been influenced by many to include the Bronte sisters and Georgette Heyer in my historical works, and Robin Schon and Sylvia Day in my more erotic stories.
What or who inspires you to write?
Because I am such a history geek, (and have a blog to prove it) (http://georgianjunkie.wordpress.com), most of my inspiration derives from history – real people, places, and events. I love bringing to vivid life the dry facts left to us in history books and putting my own twist on these sometimes titillating historical  tidbits.
I've been told that there are many writers out there who are 'organized' and use something called an outline....are you one of those kinds of writers?
Outline? What's that?
Is there a genre that you're just aching to try your hand at?
Yes. While I never see myself straying outside historical fiction, I have ideas for books that span the entire spectrum from straight historical fiction (no romance) to a historical paranormal with elements of mystery and suspense. I hope to be able to develop all of these projects in the next few years.
How many children do you have and what do they think of your writing?
I have two wonderful sons ages 17 and 20 who have both read and enjoyed my Emery Lee novels, but will never read what I write as Victoria Vane. I would not allow it even if they wanted to, which thankfully, they do not!
You're stranded on a deserted island and it will be at least six months before you're rescued. Who is with you? What would you have to have in order to survive mentally, spiritually, and physically?
Who is with me? I would take Bear Grylls.
My other necessities for survival would include:  books, coffee, and Ferrero Rocher chocolates!
What is your biggest joy as it pertains to writing? What is it that keeps you going when you don't really feel like going?
Hearing from fans… and hearing from fans.
Finally, is there a question you wished I had asked? If so, answer it here.
Question- What can readers expect from me?  Answer – the unexpected!
