Question of The Day

Good morning! I hope you are all doing well after this last blizzard hit. I am thankful to say that we survived this one with no power outages. I hope the same can be said for all of you. ;o)

As you all know, presently, I write historical fiction/historical romance. I have at least four more stories in my current Clan MacDougall series. I have a series of Regency novels that I would also like to write in addition to a couple of modern day romances and a modern day mystery series.

My question is this: Do you read genres other than historical romance/historical fiction? I'll pretty much read anything and I am curious as to what you, my beautiful readers, read. What other genres do you like? If I wrote a mystery series, would you be inclined to read it? What about Regency? Westerns? Modern or contemporary romance?

I thank you in advance for participating!

Hugs,
Suzan

  1. As you know, Scottish historicals are my first love, and at times I like a time travel thrown in the mix. However, I love Regency, Westerns and verra, verra occasionally I'll read a contemporary. I've noticed when chosing a contemporary, there seems to be a werewolf pattern happening :)

    1. LOL Angela! I can assure you that I have no desire to write about werewolves, vampires or zombies! ;o)

  2. I am mostly like Angela. I like mostly historical novels. Give me anything with a good plot and keeps me guessing and where I can't wait to read what happens and I am hooked. The first chapter tells me if I am going to read it or put it away for another book. I loved the old westerns like One Wore Blue and One Wore Gray. As you know you are my favorite ! What ever comes out your brain, I will read it. LOL

  3. I read all kinds of books. However, for the last couple of years I've been reading all romance. Contemporary, PNR, Romantic Suspense, Historical, etc. I'm more picky about my historical romances than my contemporary. I'm pickier about my historical romance as I want it to be authentic and I get irritated when authors take "literary license" with things could have/have not happened in the past. That's one of the reasons I like yours so much. I know it's historically accurate!

As for the other sub-genres, as long as the plot is good, the writing flows and I'm intrigued, I'll read it.

As for you, I'd read anything you write!!

  4. As long as it's categorized as romance, I'll read it. While historical romances are my comfort reads, I also read contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and once in a blue moon maybe a paranormal romance :)

  5. I read all kinds of books, I'm a huge Austen fan as well as a fan of all kind of Austen fan fiction and really almost any kind of regency romance, I'll dabble in other periods of historical romance as well (Allison Wier esp). I also love fantasy/sci fi (Eragon, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Jennifer Ashely's Shifters Unbound series). I actually just stated at my book club this evening that one of the things I like most about book club is that it exposes me to different kinds of books I may not have picked up otherwise. I like trying all kinds of things though I've noticed I rarely pick up anything contemporary unless it has a fantasy twist of some kind. The one thing I find I really don't like is when it's a historical fiction/time travel twist, where they take someone modern back, I've yet to find one that I feel meshes well.

But I think even more importantly for me is that if I like an author I tend to follow them. I love it when a series takes of with various characters we've met before and then brings back our old friends for cameos (as you're doing with the highlander series). But I'll also try out other things they've written, other series, or other genres too. Like the other day I started Laiden's Daughter in the morning and finished it that night, and immediately went back to amazon to see what else you had written. My only disappointment was to find that there was only one other book up there - so get writing lady!! :) So far I like the sound of what you've suggested (I'm not as into westerns, but like I said if I like an author I'm more inclined to try something out of my "comfort zone")
